A Destination studio

The Great North Sound Society is a recording studio and accommodation situated in an 18th century farmhouse in southern, interior Maine. It consists of a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house, attached barn and an attached carriage house which has been converted into a 600 sq., 16’ ceiling live room.

As a studio, GNSS was designed as a retreat style facility, where bands and solo artists can have plenty of time to explore ideas without feeling like they are quite as “on the clock” as many hourly rated studios.

The house itself is a post and beam structure built in 1790 that still has many of its original wide floor boards, horse plaster walls and staircases. The attached three story barn is unfinished but sometimes used for recording. Similarly, the many rooms of the house are often put to use as tracking rooms. The house also contains a full kitchen, living room, backyard and two porches.

SAM KASSIRER is a musician and a producer. He also owns the Great North Sound Society. He acquired the 200 year old farmhouse in 2006 as a place to house his growing collection of instruments and recording equipment. The house quickly evolved into a studio that Sam as well as many other engineers and producers know and love.

Sam’s primary instruments are anything with keys but he plays other things as well. He believes in being in an environment thats inspiring, fun and not rushed. Great North is built around being able to have the time to take sonic chances, record passionate, authentic performances, and to have a good time doing it.

Currently Sam splits his time producing albums, touring in Josh Ritter’s band, mixing albums at home and directing the occasional music video. He lives in Medford, MA.
